School-Based Child Care Centre Expansion Project

Manitoba’s Action Plan under the Canada-Manitoba Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement provides capital funding for the development and expansion of child care centres to increase access to licensed child care. It articulates Manitoba’s plan to increase the number of spaces in schools and on school property in partnership with public school divisions.

In 2023, Manitoba issued an Expression of Interest to develop new child care spaces on surplus land or in surplus building space. These projects will build on the success of Manitoba’s Child Care in Schools Policy, whereby all new schools, and schools undergoing major renovation, include a purpose-built child care centre in the design. Co-locating child care on school property supports families whose children are enrolled in that school, strengthening ties to the community.

Through funding provided under the Canada-Manitoba Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, Manitoba has announced the creation of more than 2,600 spaces for children under seven across 42 public schools. Over 500 school-age spaces will be developed in shared spaces to provide before and after school care through non-capital, provincial funding.
