Help for Teens and Children

Does your family have a lot of arguments and fights?
Does one person in your family hurt another?
Do people in your family call each other names?
Does one person in your family make the others feel bad?

Domestic violence is sometimes called family violence. Family violence is when one person hurts another person in a family. Violence can happen in all kinds of families: rich or poor, old or young, and from all cultural and religious backgrounds.

IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!

Abuse is wrong. You and your family do not have to put up with it. It is normal to feel confused and afraid about what is happening. It can help to talk about your feelings with someone you trust.

There are things you can do to stay safer.

  • Stay away from the fighting.
  • Do not try to stop the fighting yourself.
  • Go to a safe room in your home. The safest room is one that has a lock on the door and a phone.
  • Keep the phone number of an adult you trust. Call if you need help.
  • If you are old enough to leave the house by yourself, go to the home of a friend or family member.
  • If you are afraid you or someone in your family will get hurt, call the police at 911.

Manitoba Justice, Victim Services has more information on how family violence affects children. There is also a list of resources and services in the brochure called The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children.

Information about services and resources for teenage girls is also available in 4 Girls Only! a colourful, fun and fact-filled guide for girls across Manitoba in grades 6-8 that explores real-life issues that Manitoba girls have told us are important to them.
