Public Service Week: From Past to Present

Public Service Week became a reality in 1992, when MP Marlene Catterall introduced Bill C-328 in the House of Commons to recognize the value of the work performed by public servants for Canadians. The National Public Service Week Act, which designated the third week in June as National Public Service Week, received Royal Assent on June 4, 1992.

In 1993, the Manitoba Federal Council formed a sub-committee to organize events each year for Public Service Week. Since then, Manitoba's three levels of government have worked together to make Public Service Week a true celebration of the pride, dedication and excellence that public servants bring to their jobs and careers.

Manitoba Public Service Week

The steering committee for Public Service Week in Manitoba is made up of representatives from all three levels of government. Their objective is to provide senior government members with the opportunity, and some basic tools, to appropriately recognize the value of the public servants they employ. They also sponsor and organize events in Winnipeg that are open to all Manitoba public servants and encourage and support event planning in communities around the Province.

Growing role of public service

It is a challenging time for governments in all jurisdictions. Over the next few years, the public service is expected to play a critical role in redefining and revitalizing services for citizens. As a result, senior representatives from governments and unions across the country are leading efforts to increase public awareness of the many outstanding contributions public servants have made in serving Canadians.

Recognizing contributions

Public Service Week gives employees from departments and agencies across the country an opportunity to reflect on their roles in government - the skills they've learned, the contributions they've provided and the impact they've made on Canadian life. It is also an opportunity to look to the future - to consider what they've learned from their successes, and to continue exploring innovative ways to improve services to Canadians.

Taking this week to recognize the contributions of public servants helps enhance their pride in themselves and in the work they do so well.
