Accident Reporting for Motor Carriers
The Manitoba government recently introduced amendments to The Highway Traffic Act intended to improve safety on Manitoba highways. One of the changes is the introduction of an accident reporting requirement for accidents involving heavy trucks to Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI).
Effective January 1, 2026, motor carriers operating regulated vehicles in Manitoba are required to report any traffic accident involving a regulated vehicle that:
- results in more than $2,000 in property damage, or
- results in the vehicle(s) being towed from the scene of the accident, or
- results in a police report
The accident reports must be submitted to the department for any accident that involves a heavy motor vehicle on a Manitoba roadway. Carriers are still required to report accidents resulting in injury or fatality to the local police agencies in addition to MTI.
The accident report can be submitted using the online form linked below. Carriers need the following details to complete the report:
- carrier details
- contact information for the person making the report
- accident details (e.g, location, driving conditions)
- vehicle(s) information
- vehicle(s) registration details
- driver(s) details and driver license numbers
To report a motor carrier collision, use the Motor Carrier Collision Report form.
