Scott Anderson

Scott Anderson is the Chief Geologist of the Mineral Deposits Section of the MGS. Scott obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba (1992) and a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University (1998). His Ph.D. research was focused on the tectonothermal evolution of the Laurentian margin in central Newfoundland. Prior to joining MGS in 2001, Scott worked four years in Sonora, Mexico exploring for sediment-hosted gold deposits as the Senior Structural Geologist for Campbell Resources Inc. His current research is focused on Archean tectonics and metallogeny in the western Superior province and south margin of the Hearne craton.

Chris Beaumont-Smith

Chris Beaumont-Smith was appointed the Director of Mines Branch in 2015 and the Director of the Geological Survey in 2017. Chris joined the Mines Branch after acting as manager of the Minerals Policy and Business Development section, and prior to that, as a mineral deposit geologist with the Manitoba Geological Survey. A New Brunswick native, Chris received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in structural geology from the University of New Brunswick. Before joining the Manitoba Government, Chris worked with several major Canadian gold and base metal exploration and mining companies.

Christian Böhm

Christian Böhm received his diploma degree and Ph.D. in geology from ETH Zurich in Switzerland. He did post-doctoral research and teaching at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, prior to joining the Manitoba Geological Survey in 2002. In Manitoba, Christian's focus has primarily been on the Precambrian evolution of the Archean Superior and Hearne cratons using geological mapping, geochemistry, structural, isotope and geochronological methods. Christian was Chief Geologist of Precambrian Mapping from 2009 to 2012, then Acting Director of the Manitoba Geological Survey until last year, when he resumed his Chief Geologist position.

Chris Couëslan

Chris is a geologist with the Precambrian geoscience section of the Manitoba Geological Survey. He obtained a BSc in geology from Brandon University in 2003, an MSc from the University of Western Ontario in 2005, and a PhD at the University of Calgary in 2013. His Ph.D. research was focused on the tectonometamorphic evolution of the Thompson Nickel Belt. Chris has been working at the Manitoba Geological Survey since 2008. His work has focused on the geology of the Thompson Nickel Belt and deciphering the geology of high-grade metamorphic domains.

Jim Downey is former deputy premier of Manitoba and held several cabinet posts including minister of northern affairs responsible for native affairs and natural resources, minister of rural development, minister responsible for energy and mines, and minister of industry, trade and tourism. He has extensive experience working with northern First Nations communities and was instrumental in finalizing comprehensive settlements to resolve outstanding claims under the Northern Flood Agreement.

Chief Ron Evans is the chief of Norway House Cree Nation. Evans has shown significant leadership in bringing together First Nations communities in Manitoba that have immediate or potential mineral development opportunities and have expressed interest in participating in resource development projects. Evans was the co-chair of the Minister's Mining Advisory Council under the previous Manitoba government. He is the former vice-chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) and held various portfolios including Natural Resources and Economic Development. Evans is also a former grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

Tyler Hodder



Tyler obtained his B.Sc. (Honours, Cooperative) in 2012 and M.Sc. in 2014 from the University of Waterloo. He joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in January of 2015 as a Quaternary Geologist. Tyler's current research focuses on the interpretation of the surficial geology of Manitoba, including mapping, ice flow history, glacial dispersal and Quaternary stratigraphy.

Glen Kuntz

Mr. Kuntz has over 26 years' of experience in exploration, project development, open pit and underground mining operations and business development across a variety of commodities and throughout the Americas, Africa and Australia. Glen has successfully found and developed large, high grade multimillion ounce deposits utilizing a creative style leadership and is an effective team builder in very diverse cultures through his experiences with Yamana Gold, Mega Precious Metals, Runge, Barrick, Placer Dome, Rea Gold, Noranda and INCO. Glen is a broadly competent senior executive/geologist with an acumen degree and strong technology background. This background led to his accomplishments as a commercially proficient President and CEO of a successful junior exploration company that was acquired by Yamana Gold, a senior mid-tier gold mining company. During his tenure as President and CEO, Glen successfully raised over $100M in equity during very difficult markets and took a lead on the acquisition of Mega Precious Metals for a 140% premium. Glen currently holds the position of Director Exploration Projects with Yamana Gold Inc. The role includes leading multi-disciplinary technical service teams to advance North American Exploration Projects and technical due diligence teams to evaluate opportunities to strategically grow the company. In conjunction with this role, Glen also holds an active position as a member of the Mining Association of Manitoba Inc.'s (MAMI) Aboriginal Relations Committee which was created to support developing positive business relationships between the mining industry and Aboriginal peoples.

Kathryn Lapenskie

Kathryn joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in 2015 as an Industrial and Specialty Minerals Geologist. She works primarily in the Phanerozoic Williston Basin, focusing on industrial mineral commodities from Lower Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata. Kathryn obtained a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of Manitoba in 2012, and is completing her M.Sc. from the University of Western Ontario, majoring in geology for both degrees. She has preformed biostratigraphic research and correlation in Manitoba and across North America.

Robert Linnen

Robert Linnen obtained a BSc from Queen's University, then MSc and PhD degrees from McGill University, the latter involved Sn-W-Nb-Ta metallogeny in Thailand. After postdoctoral and research associate positions at CNRS at Orléans, France and the Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Germany, he took up an Associate Professor position at the University of Waterloo. In 2010 he moved to Western University at London Ontario where he is the Robert Hodder Chair in Economic Geology and the Director of Resource Geoscience Western. His research focuses on intrusion-related critical metal (Li, Ta, Nb, W and REE), and precious metal (Au and PGE) deposits. His research combines geological constrains from field studies with experiments on the behavior of metal to generate ore deposit models.

Tânia Martins

Tânia graduated in Geology in 2002 from University of Porto, Portugal. After a brief period of time in consulting she obtained her PhD in Geology in 2009 from the University of Porto studying Li-Sn-Nb-Ta mineralization in granitic pegmatites. In 2010 and 2011 Tânia worked with Anton Chakhmouradian at the University of Manitoba on the mineralogy of alkaline rocks and carbonatites. Tânia has worked for the Manitoba Geological Survey since November 2011.

Michelle Nicolas

Michelle P.B. Nicolas attained her B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. in geology from the University of Manitoba. She joined the Manitoba Government in 1998 as a Petroleum Geologist with the Petroleum Branch of Manitoba Growth, Enterprise and Trade. She joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in 2007 as a Petroleum Geologist and Phanerozoic Stratigrapher, and is now the Chief Geologist of Sedimentary Geoscience. Her specialty is in the petroleum geology and stratigraphy of Manitoba's two Phanerozoic sedimentary basins. She has guest lectured at Brandon University and the University of Manitoba, and has co-supervised several undergrad theses. She has done work on most of the Phanerozoic formations in the Williston Basin, including the prolific Bakken Formation, the potash-bearing Prairie Evaporite, and deep subsurface brines. She also works on the stratigraphy and hydrocarbon potential of the frontier Hudson Bay Basin. She is a registered Professional Geoscientist with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, and is a Fellow of Geoscientists Canada.

Shastri Ramnath

Ms. Shastri Ramnath is a Professional Geoscientist with over 18 years of global experience within the exploration and mining industry. She started her career at Falconbridge in Winnipeg in 1999 and then moved to Sudbury to join FNX Mining in 2002. She was a key member of the exploration and resource group at FNX and was part of the team that discovered the Victoria Deposit. In 2010, Shastri joined Bridgeport Ventures Inc. as President and CEO where she raised over 17 million in the capital markets and then merged the company with Premier Royalty. Most recently, she co-founded Orix Geoscience Inc., a geological consulting firm that partners with exploration and mining companies to provide 3D geological interpretation, data management, field program management and modelling services. The success of Orix in its inaugural 3 years resulted in Shastri being nominated for the RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and was one of 3 finalists for the Momentum Award.

Shastri received a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from the University of Manitoba in 1999, a M.Sc. in Exploration Geology from Rhodes University (South Africa) in 2001, and completed an MBA from Athabasca University (Edmonton) in 2012.

 

 

Kyle Reid

Kyle Reid has a B. Sc in geology from Brandon University and is in the process of defending his Ph.D. at the University of Saskatchewan, where he studied the controls on hydrothermal uranium minerals in the Athabasca Basin using mineral geochemistry, whole-rock geochemistry, and stable and radiogenic isotopes. He has experience working as an exploration geologist in Manitoba's Flin Flon belt searching for VMS deposits. Kyle's present position is as a Precambrian geologist in the Minerals Deposit Section of the Manitoba Geological Survey.

 

 

Marc Rinne

Marc Rinne

Marc Rinne completed a Master's degree at Lakehead University studying volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization. He then completed a Ph.D. at the University of Tasmania, studying regional tectonic controls on ore formation and genetic links between porphyry and epithermal ore systems. He has extensive field and laboratory experience with a variety of other mineral deposit styles, and has worked in mineral exploration and consulting for several years. Marc now serves as a Precambrian geologist with the Manitoba Geological Survey.

Mark Scott

Mark Scott is Head of Manitoba Operations for Vale Canada Limited, overseeing the entire mining, milling, smelting and refining complex in Thompson, Manitoba. Mr. Scott began his career with Vale Ontario Operations in 2001 and joined Manitoba Operations in 2003. In Thompson, he has held roles including General Manager of Human Resources and Sustainability, Manager of the Thompson Nickel Refinery, and Director of Mining & Milling. Mark was appointed as head of Manitoba Operations on February 1, 2016. Mr. Scott holds Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Dalhousie University, a Master of Industrial Relations (MIR) degree from the University of Toronto, and a master's certificate in project management from the Schulich School of Business (York University). Mark is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Mining Association of Manitoba Inc. (MAMI). Mark also sits on the Manitoba Board of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and was a member of Manitoba's "Look North" northern economic development task force.

Eric Yang

Xue-Ming (Eric) Yang, Ph.D., P.Geo., has been trained and practised as an Economic Geologist, and worked as a faculty member in the University of Science and Technology of China for ten years and as an Exploration Geologist for few mining companies including INCO (now Vale) in Canada for seven years. Eric joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in June 2011 as a Mineral Deposit Geologist, investigating geology and metallogeny of various ore deposits via geological mapping, lithogeochemistry, petrology, GIS compilation and analysis. His interests of research include magmatic nickel-copper-PGE deposits, intrusion-related gold deposits, and alkaline rock-carbonatite associated rare earth element deposits.
