The 2012 Towards Flourishing Knowledge Exchange Event

The Towards Flourishing Knowledge Exchange Event was an opportunity for sharing in the lessons learned from piloting the Towards Flourishing Mental Health Promotion Strategy. It was also a celebration of our partnerships moving this strategy forward to foster the mental health and well-being of Manitoban families.

A special thank you is given to the Honourable Kevin Chief who gave the opening address to the event.

A special thank you is also extended to our keynote speaker Dr. Cindy-Lee Dennis, who presented on Post-partum depression.  Dr. Cindy-Lee Dennis is a professor in nursing and psychiatry at the University of Toronto and holds a Canada Research Chair in Perinatal Community Health.

Towards Flourishing Cultural Adaptation

Father & Son

CULTURE refers to the ideas, beliefs, values, knowledge and way of life of a group of people who share some aspect of the experience. It includes physical things such as clothing, food, or ways of acting but it also includes things that are not directly observable, such as ways of thinking or beliefs.

CULTURAL SAFETY refers to interacting with others in ways that support the integrity of their cultural identity. Culturally safe practices involve respecting and appreciating cultural differences and working toward building trusting relationships that take into consideration all of the impacts that may be a part of the client’s life experience

CULTURAL CAPACITY is about developing the skills that let other people feel safe in sharing their own culturally distinct perspectives, experiences and knowledge. It isn’t necessary to know everything about another culture, but instead to be open to understanding how one’s cultural experiences play a role in their life.

Adapted from A Culture of Well-being Supporting the Emotional Wellness and Mental Health Needs of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit People, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, 2010.

The Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada published by the Public Health Agency of Canada (2008) features a category on diversity and inclusiveness that contains the following guidelines:

1) Recognize how the determinants of health influence the health and well-being of
specific population groups.

2) Address population diversity when planning, implementing, adapting and evaluating public
health programs and policies.

3) Apply culturally-relevant and appropriate approaches with people from diverse cultural,
socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, and persons of all ages, genders, health status,
sexual orientations and abilities.
