Project Description
Main objectives:
The main objective of this project is to produce a new 1:20 000 scale geological map of the Paint Lake area. The new map will subdivide the currently undivided migmatitic basement gneiss of the Thompson Nickel Belt into discrete lithological units, and help determine if potentially Ni-hosting rocks of the Ospwagan Group are present.
Methodology:
- 1:20 000 scale bedrock mapping of the islands and shoreline of Paint Lake based on protolith interpretation rather than descriptive petrography.
- Compare lithogeochemistry and isotope geochemistry between known Ospwagan Group lithologies and Paint Lake metasediments.
- Integration of available airborne geophysical data for map interpretation.
- Isotopic, mineralogical, and geochemical characterization of various units.
Benefits:
The updated map will provide a better geological understanding of the eastern Thompson Nickel Belt and the Archean basement to the Ospwagan Group. The project will improve the ability to discern potentially Ni-hosting Ospwagan Group from Archean lithologies with lower nickel potential.
