Manitoba Relationship Declaration with First Nations
On May 13, 2024 the Manitoba government and First Nation Chiefs from across the province signed a historic relationship declaration committing to the transfer of jurisdiction over child welfare to First Nations. The signing of the Relationship Declaration represents a commitment to reconciliation, recognizing the inherent rights and responsibilities of Indigenous Nations to govern and protect their children in ways that align with their cultural values and traditions.
The declaration responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It was an important step towards fulfilling the Minister’s mandate commitment to collaborate with Indigenous governments and communities to transfer responsibility of child welfare back to the Nations and families where it belongs.
The Relationship Declaration is available in the following languages*:
- Anishininiimowin (Nakaway Ikitowin)
- Denesuline
