Filing a Complaint with the Consumer Protection Office
Manitoba has consumer protection laws in place to reduce unfair and misleading options for consumers. Sometimes consumers are part of a transaction that doesn’t go as they expected or it feels like a bad deal. These consumers can file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Office to determine if the transaction was acceptable under the law.
Tips for Filing a Complaint
Be concise and describe:
- The transaction
- For example, "I signed a contract with a door-to-door seller from ABC Business…" or "I purchased a new/used vehicle from ABC Dealer…"
- Date of transaction
- What the problem is
- When the problem arose
- What was the business’s response to the problem and who was spoken to
- What you are seeking to resolve the complaint
Provide copies of relevant documents such as:
- Bill of sale/invoice
- Contract(s)/financing agreements, advertisement
- Receipts/proof of payment
- Warranties applicable
- Correspondence or documentation relating to the problem
- Consent forms that can be obtained from the Consumer Protection Office
Also provide:
- Consumer’s name, address and daytime telephone number
Know your rights and responsibilities as a consumer in Manitoba.
