When your purchase doesn't work out, what are your rights?

The average person makes hundreds of purchases each year. Most of the time, those purchases work out well. But sometimes, the shirt or pants you buy don't fit quite right or perhaps you've bought someone a gift that wasn't wanted. So what can you do?

Although many merchants will accept returns for refunds or exchanges if you aren't satisfied with a purchase you have made, they are under no obligation to do so. Make sure you know the rules regarding refunds and exchanges, and keep the following in mind when making a purchase:

  • Do not assume you have the right to a refund or exchange.
  • Keep return merchandise in good condition and return it as soon as possible.
  • Ask about a store's refund and exchange policy before you buy. If it's not noted on the receipt, be sure to get it in writing.
  • Keep all receipts and original packaging so you can provide proof of purchase for a refund or exchange.
  • Merchants are within their rights to provide your refund as a credit note.
  • Some merchants may retain a service fee or a restocking charge.

If merchandise is faulty or defective, the seller has an option to repair, replace or refund it as either cash or credit note.
