1822 January

Thursday 17th Thermometer 21° below 0 People at home employed as before. Governor Simpson & Mr Miles arrived from York Factory having come this way on their tour to Red River – which place Governor Simpson intends visiting and passing the remainder of the season at – they were accompanied from Moose Lake by Messrs James & Francis Heron, Mr Mittleberg and five men, together with Mr Simpsons servant & the White Governor from YF – Hugh Gibson & George MBeath arrived from our hunting tent – requesting some provisions, as the Indians they were depending on for meat have been very unfortunate in hunting and at this time are actually all starving…

Saturday 19th Wind Northerly cloudy weather Thermometer 28° below 0. People at home employed as before – the men returned from Beaver Lave with 1520 Whitefish & 4 Trout – returned Hugh Gibson & George M Beath to the Hill with a little supply of provisions to enable them to live till the Indians are more successful the latter is ordered to return again immediately in order to accompany Governor Simpson to Red River…

Tuesday 22nd Cloudy with snow at times, Thermometer 8° below 0. Mr James Heron with his man & the two men that arrived form Carlton a few days ago set off on their return to that place, carrying Dispatches from Governor Simpson to the Gentlemen commanding posts in the interior – People at home employed as yesterday…

Sunday 27th Cold boisterous day Thermometer 25° below 0 Sent Mr Mittleberg & L’Emerise in company with Dayneau to the Paw from which place the latter is to proceed to Norway House along with Normand where they are to pass the rest of the season, Dayneau as Blacksmith & Normand to repair canoes. Three men arrived from Beaver Lake with 270 fish. Prayers read by Governor Williams.

Monday 28th Weather cold. Thermometer 30° below 0 Mr Douglas with his man started for Rocky Lake. Sent three men to the Hunting Tent. Brisbois Neddle & Archibald Murdoch hauling fire wood. James Murdoch & Cummins hauling Hay. Alex Murdoch cutting dry wood Sandison & Spence turning Snow Shoes. Berond making a Carriole for Governor Simpson. Tait making Rat Spears, Sent two men to visit the Tobacco Indian beyond Beaver Lake. Garrioch taken very ill – 3 Sturgeon 20 Whitefish & 18 of other sorts from the Nets.
