Year-Round Shipping and Icebreaking
Studies by Fednav and the Arctic Research Foundation (ARF), together with research from the University of Manitoba, confirm that year-round navigation through Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait is achievable using existing ice-class vessel technology. Fednav found that modern ice-class vessels can operate through the corridor throughout the year and do not require icebreaker support for every voyage. ARF's findings confirm new opportunities from expanded marine access, including stronger northern supply chains, increased resource exports, improved community resupply, greater Indigenous economic participation and a stronger Canadian presence in the Arctic.
The focus can now shift from whether year-round shipping is possible to how it can be implemented. Icebreaking is an important part of that marine transportation network, providing greater reliability, flexibility and support during challenging ice conditions. ARF has examined icebreaking options and costs as part of its broader work on expanded marine access. Together, these studies provide a strong foundation for a dependable year-round marine corridor through Churchill.
The shipping season through Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait has already lengthened and is expected to continue expanding over the coming decades. With modern ice-capable vessels, targeted icebreaking capability and the necessary investments in the Port of Churchill and connecting infrastructure, Churchill has the potential to operate as a year-round trade gateway linking Northern and Western Canada with international markets.
The opportunity extends beyond shipping. Expanded year-round access can strengthen northern supply chains, support exports of Canadian energy, critical minerals, grain and other commodities, improve community resupply, create new opportunities for Indigenous economic participation and strengthen Canada's presence in the Arctic.
