Project Description
Main objectives:
The objective of this project is to develop a seamless 3D geological model of Paleozoic- and Mesozoic-aged rocks of the Williston Basin in western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, from subsurface to outcrop, in order to enhance our knowledge of subsurface mineral potential and hydrocarbon migration and entrapment in this very prolific portion of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.
Methodology:
- Identify major geological units within the project area and develop a stratigraphic correlation chart specific to the project.
- Develop a web-enabled compilation of existing literature and current geoscience knowledge for the project area.
- Create a stratigraphic database of all the formation tops picked specifically for the project, and produce regional isopach and structure maps for all major geological units in the study area.
- Create a 3D regional geological model of the project area;
- Produce a regional hydrogeological model for Phanerozoic strata, and a geophysical model of the Precambrian basement.
Benefits:
The project will: 1) fill a major gap in basic stratigraphic information on cross-border correlations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan stratigraphy; 2) enhance our knowledge of subsurface mineral potential (e.g. brines and potash), and hydrocarbon migration and entrapment; 3) will incorporate geophysical and hydrogeological data to enhance our understanding of hydrocarbon migration paths and traps, within and beyond, traditional geographic areas of hydrocarbon production.
