Project Description
Main objectives:
The main objective of this project is to update the existing geological map of the Bird River Belt, focusing on stratigraphy, structure, and new geochemical and geochronological data. This mapping will benefit from concurrent structural and mineralogical studies (University of Waterloo), leading to an enhanced new map and improved understanding of the geological history and economic potential of the belt.
Methodology:
- Detailed 1:20 000 scale geological mapping that updates the previous 1:50 000 scale mapping done in 1970 to 1980;
- Utilization of modern volcanological techniques and geochemical investigations to characterize and subdivide supracrustal rocks;
- Collection of lithologic and petrographic data and structural information to improve the understanding both of the stratigraphy and deformation/metamorphic history; and
- Investigation and documentation of mineral occurrences and their geotectonic setting, including evaluation of the mineral potential of the area.
Benefits:
Published data will constitute a resource for the mineral exploration industry, and assist in focusing exploration programs on terranes with the best potential. The data will also contribute toward a better overall understanding of the geologic history and economic potential of the Bird River greenstone belt.
