Project Description

Main objectives:

This project was initiated in 2014 to identify petrogenetic types of granitoids in diverse terranes, domains and belts in Manitoba, and to investigate their geodynamic settings and mineralization potential. It will create a GIS-based database dealing with their field relations, petrography, lithogeochemistry, and geochronology and relationships to Cu-Au-Mo, Sn-W, and rare metals mineralization.

Methodology:

Methods include geological mapping, petrographic analysis, mineral chemistry, lithogeochemistry, Nd isotopes, geochronology (U-Pb TIMS), GIS compilation and analysis.

  • Petrogenetic types of granitoids can be constrained by field relations, magnetic susceptibility, mineral assemblages, mineral chemistry, and geochemical compositions.
  • Geochemical processes of granitoid magmas and their sources will be investigated by using lithogeochemistry and Nd isotopes supported by precise U-Pb zircon age determination.
  • The emplacement conditions of granitoid intrusions are assessed by Al-in-hornblende geobarometer and zircon-saturation geothermometer aided by petrographic analysis.
  • Geodynamic settings of granitoids and their potential for various mineralization are investigated by multidisciplinary approaches using all available geoscientific data to discern the temporal and spatial distributions of granitoids in Manitoba, and the roles they played in the amalgamation of different terranes, domains, and belts over geological times.

Benefits:

The project provides fundamental geoscientific information of granitoids in Manitoba, which assists in improving understanding geodynamic evolution, juxtaposition of different terranes, and crustal growth. The evaluation of potential for mineralization associated with different types of granitoids and their roles played in genesis of orogenic gold would benefit mineral exploration targeting.

Plans for fiscal year 2023–2024 (tentative):

  • Carry out two weeks of field work in southeastern Manitoba in collaboration with Dr. Long Li and his graduate student from the University of Alberta
  • Perform nitrogen isotope analysis of granitoid samples to study their petrogenetic processes, and to probe source(s) of critical metals hosted in Tanco-type pegmatites
