Knee Replacements

Streamlined processes and new funding will allow for nearly 25 per cent more procedures in 2019.

Data in this chart shows the median wait time for knee replacements.

NOTE: This Manitoba wait time data cannot be compared to the wait times reported for Manitoba by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

  • The Manitoba data does not include wait times for patients who had their surgeries delayed because they were unavailable. The CIHI data includes data for patients who had their surgeries delayed because they were unavailable.
  • The Manitoba data does not include both knee replacement and knee revision surgeries. The CIHI data includes both knee replacement and knee revision surgeries.
  • The Manitoba data for knee replacement wait times is reported monthly. The CIHI data is reported for a single six-month period.

Data Information:

The median wait time is the maximum wait time experienced by half (50 per cent) of the patients who received a knee replacement during that month. The wait time refers to the number of weeks between the 'decision to treat' date and surgery date.

The data includes primary knee replacements, but not partial knee replacements. It includes wait times for patients who are fit and ready, but excluding emergency cases. A lower number is better, because it shows a shorter amount of time for the patient to receive surgery.

Volume

The volume refers to the number of knee joint replacement procedures completed during the reporting month.
