Preparing for a Visit to the Archives
Planning your visit will ensure you make the most of your time here at the Archives of Manitoba. Here are some tips:
- Identifying the records you need may take some time. Before visiting the Archives it's good to have a clear idea of your research purpose. Preliminary investigation of a research topic can save you considerable time. Consult local libraries, community archives and historical societies before coming to the Archives. It is recommended that you bring as much information about your research topic with you to the Archives.
- The pursuit of family history demands a step-by-step approach, beginning with family tradition and documents. The Archives has many sources that can take your research further. Many of the Archives' holdings are described in the Keystone Archives Descriptive Database.
- Many records have been microfilmed and can be borrowed through a local library using the Archives' Microfilm Program.
- You may bring paper, notebooks and laptops while conducting your research at the Archives. Laptops can be used in designated areas.
- Contact us to send an inquiry or to book an appointment in advance of your arrival if you are conducting more refined research.
- When you visit the Archives of Manitoba, research staff are available to discuss your research with you, give instructions in the use of archival research tools, and provide information about the Research Room services available to you.
