Manitoba Comes Alive at the 2010 Winter Games
Manitoba will be front and centre to welcome the world and showcase our province at the Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Manitoba's plans for the 2010 Winter Games include the province's pavilion, CentrePlace Manitoba, participation in the Olympic Torch Relay and the Cultural Olympiad.
Made-in-Manitoba Pavilion
CentrePlace Manitoba is a 2,560 sq ft, pre-fabricated, sustainable building featuring Manitoba products and technology. Multi-media exhibits, developed in Manitoba, will showcase tourism, business, immigration and sport and highlight our province’s prosperity, opportunity and potential. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be a partner and have a feature exhibit in the pavilion.
CentrePlace Manitoba will be located at the Live City Vancouver – Downtown site (on Georgia Street at Cambie)
Designed to the highest green standards, by Manitoba’s Cibinel Architects, the pavilion features a recyclable translucent outer wall and reclaimed elm woodwork. The building design is intended to be evocative of our province’s diversity, from sculpted landforms, lakes and rivers to our vibrant urban centres. Lighting design on the building’s exterior will showcase images of our shimmering northern lights, majestic polar bears and herds of bison.
The Torch Relay in Manitoba
The Olympic Torch Relay first arrived in Manitoba in Thompson on November 7 and then stopped in Churchill on Nov 8. The Flame will return to Manitoba on January 5 to 9. Eight community celebrations will be held in Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Neepawa. In total, the relay will visit 33 Manitoba communities with 400 people carrying the torch.
The full Olympic Torch Relay itinerary can be found on the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games website.
Manitoba Performers on the World Stage
From January 22 to March 21, artists from Canada and around the world will perform in British Columbia as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Thirty Manitoba artists and arts groups will perform, supported by the Manitoba Arts Council. Many of our province’s Aboriginal artists will also perform at the Four Host First Nations pavilion.
Visit the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games website for the full list of Cultural Olympiad performers.
